Potters Bar Town 1 Whitstable Town 2
FA Carlsberg Trophy 1st Qualifying Round Replay
Monday 21st October 2013
Whitstable stormed back to win their FA Trophy 1st Qualifying Round replay following a poor first half where they appeared to be second best.
The game started with the pressure coming from the hosts and they created the first opportunity after eight minutes when Josh Hutchinson shot straight at Luke Watkins. After 12 minutes a cross from Ben Bowditch found Wesley Beckles whose attempt bounced into the ground and over the bar. Potters Bar continued to press and took a deserved lead on 23 minutes when Hutchinson got on the end of a corner and looped a header over Watkins into the back of the net. There was very little attacking opportunities created by the visitors until the 29th minute when a Scott Heard cross was tipped away by Ed Thompson in the
Potters Bar goal. Two minutes later the home team were back on the attack when the ever dangerous Fabian Simms who was a thorn in Whitstable’s side throughout the first half put in a cross that was met by Bowditch but he could not get quite enough on the ball to threaten the goal. Town did have one more attack on half time when a cross by Heard was met by Ashley Baverstock on the far side of the penalty area but his header went wide. At half time Whitstable could probably count themselves lucky that they were only one down.
Whatever Nicky Southall said at half time seem to wake the visitors as they started the half with more purpose than was seen throughout the first period. On 50 minutes Town were level when Baverstock fired home. Within two minutes the whole game had turned round as Town scored again as Joe Kane had a free header from a Heard corner to put Whitstable into the lead. Town now looked the more confident side and continued to press . On 56 minutes Heard had a shot from the right hand side that went wide of the target.. There was still danger from the hosts on the break but Town’s defence stood firm. Firstly after 62 minutes Brad Wadkins got a shot in at the
far post but the ball was blocked by Laurence Harvey and on 79 minutes Beckles broke free to attempt to chip the ball into the net but his attempt went wide. Whitstable should have put the game out of reach ten minutes from time when an attempt by Joe Lester was clawed away by keeper Thompson. Adam Hooper sent the rebound wide of the target. Potters Bar did threaten in injury time with two attempts one by Dan Millard and the second by Tom Laxton but both were easily saved by Watkins.
It had been the proverbial game of “two halves” but Whitstable turned out victors thanks to the second half transformation.
