WHITSTABLE REGAIN TROPHY: Whitstable Town 2 Herne Bay 2: (Whitstable win 4-1 on pens): Bruce Smith Shield: Tuesday 17th July 2012: Whitstable came out of their first pre season game with a trophy as they beat rivals Herne Bay 4-1 on penalties after a very entertaining 2-2 draw. They therefore regained the Bruce Smith Trophy. The visitors had the best of the early exchanges but as Whitstable began to gel they took the lead after 15 minutes when a cross ball from Damian Abel using the outside of his foot found James Morrish to head home. The home side had a couple of opportunities to extend their lead with an Abel strike after 35 minutes went over the bar and then two minutes later Micheal Everitt sent an effort wide. Just on half time Bay striker Byron Walker levelled the scores following a ball sent in from the left.
Then started the Jake McKenzie show as in the 64th minute he sent over a pin point cross which found Dan Luchford whose header found the back of the net. Two minutes later McKenzie crashed the ball against the bar. Dan Wisker also had an opportunity after 70 minutes when he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but lobbed the ball high and wide of the goal.
On 78 minutes a goal melee led to Herne Bay forcing the ball over the line to equalise for the second time. So the game eventually went into penalties as it had twice before in the five year history of this fixture. After Nicky Southall found the net with Town’s first penalty, ex Town Favourite Tom Parker sent his penalty high over the bar. This set the scene with Town only missing one of their penalties and Herne Bay only scoring one. It was left to Wisker to fire home the winner. An excellent night’s warm up in front of a good pre season crowd of 141.
