Whitstable Town 2 AFC Hornchurch 1
Pre Season Fixture
Saturday 1st August 2015
Whitstable finished pre season on a high as they ran out 2-1 winners at home to Ryman Division One North, AFC Hornchurch on Saturday afternoon.
However it was the visitors who created the best chances in the first half. It was Whitstable who had the first attempt as after twelve minutes Ira Jackson cut in and shot high over the bar. It was then Hornchurch who took control as on twenty minutes they took the lead. The ever dangerous George Purcell hit a speculative shot from 25
yards which Whitstable keeper Adam Highsted failed to hold and the ball went straight into the net. Highsted was to make amends for his mistake as within seven minutes he firstly palmed over a Purcell shot and then he blocked an attempt from the same player. On 33 minutes Joey May had a shot that went wide for the visitors and it wasn’t until four minutes before the break that Town had an attempt as Sam Bewick fired a shot from outside the area high over the bar.
The second half saw Whitstable more on the front foot throughout the second half as captain Nick Treadwell’s shot was saved well by ex Whitstable keeper Sam Mott. On 53 minutes Town got the
equaliser that their play deserved. Jackson took the ball into the penalty area and slotted his shot past Mott. However the next two chances came at the other end as Highsted saved twice in a minute, from Dave Knight and on 66 minutes Purcell fired over the bar. It was substitute Kieron Campbell who dominated the action in the last twelve minutes as firstly after 78 minutes he shot over the bar. With a minute of normal time to go Campbell was bundled over in the penalty area. The referee, without hesitation, pointed to the spot. Up stepped Scott Heard whose penalty was well saved by Mott but the ball rebounded to Heard who made no mistake to score the winner. Two minutes into injury time Campbell weaved his way into the penalty area. His shot slammed into the post and away.
It was a good finish to pre season for the Town as they prepare for next week’s first league game at Walton & Hersham.
