It was a dark day at Old Road, Crayford on Saturday as Whitstable were defeated by Kent League, VCD Athletic  on a thoroughly foul afternoon.

The game did start in the dry and the first opportunity came in the 5th minute when Dane Luchford broke away giving the ball to James Morrish but his shot was fired well wide. At the other end Jimmy Rogers didn’t make the most of VCD’s first chance sending his shot over the bar.

It was in the 23rd minute that Shane Hamshare and Rob French got themselves in a complete mess and in the confusion Hamshare sent a header past French into the back of the net to give VCD Athletic the lead.

In the 32nd minute Town should have drawn level.  The ball came to Micheal Everitt who headed onto Laurence Harvey who pulled the ball back to Ian Pulman who missed a golden opportunity. The half time score of 1-0 was a fair reflection of the first period.

Whatever Justin Luchford said at half time seemed to have an immediate effect as Town started the second half on the front foot.  After 54 minutes, Scott Heard had a shot well saved by home keeper Steve Northwood. The weather was very quickly deteriorating. The jet black clouds moved over the ground and the rain came down in torrents. The remarkable sight of lightning bolts lit up the sky and seemed to inspire Town to get their equaliser. A goal mouth scramble, in the 58th minute, eventually found Everitt who pushed the ball into the net for his second goal of the season.  Town kept up the pressure but could not turn that into a goal.

As the rain stopped Whitstable seemed to go back into their shell and VCD began to threaten again and two minutes from time VCD striker Billy Shinners found himself free and slotted the ball past substitute keeper Nick Shaw to send Town out of the FA Cup.
