Milton & Fulston United 0  Whitstable Town 2 (AET)

Kent County Youth Cup 3rd Round

Sunday 3rd February 2013

After a lengthy lay-off due to the weather, Whitstable’s U18’s finally got to play their Third Round County Cup game.  On a very heavy pitch both teams dusted off their cobwebs and attempted to play passing football with Fulston shooting wide early on.  Whitstable gathered some momentum and started to take hold of the first half with a number of half chances supplied by Lewis King and Sam Hudson, with Tom Bines coming close to opening the score.

The second half began an onslaught from the Whitstable boys with them changing to a very direct formation.  Wave after wave of attacks were mounted with at least seven players missing opportunities, Fulston defending for their lives and hanging on; with their Goal-keeper making several saves from Connor Rochester,  Jordan Goldsmith, Dan Packer and Kari Creed to name a few.  Unfortunately, due to Town’s poor shooting the game then went into extra time.

With the light fading the first period ended 0-0, and the concerns of a penalty shootout in the dark looked a possibility.  Whitstable pressed and finally broke the deadlock with Jimmy Lambert delivering a cross from the right finding Callum Reynolds who headed home from four yards.  This spurred Town on and Callum slotted home number two placing a shot into the left hand corner some minutes later.

The final whistle was blown and the relief was felt with some of the boys playing over two hours of football.

Well done to both teams, Fulston for their battling display and the Whitstable boys for staying focused and reaching the Quarter Finals.
