Whitstable Town 3 Walton & Hersham 2

Ryman League Division One (South)

Saturday 9th August 2014

Whitstable Town got their season off to a winning start on Saturday when they won three two at home to Walton & Hersham.

Town nearly got their season off to a golden start when after only 27 seconds Tom Loynes cut the ball back to Ian Pulman whose shot went over the bar. However after four minutes a setback for the hosts as a cross came into the area deflected off  Aaron James into his own net to give the visitors the lead. However their lead only lasted seven minutes before Loynes found himself one on one with Walton & Hersham keeper Gary Ross and coolly slotted the ball into

the corner of the net to bring the scores level.  On 28 minutes man of the match Nick Treadwell gave the Town the lead when he found himself in the penalty and was able to force the ball over the line. The game was going end to end and three minutes later Walton & Hersham found themselves level when Town keeper Luke Watkins appeared to drop the ball and the ball was deflected  over the line by the unlucky Aaron James.  There were a couple more chances for the visitors as Watkins saved well from a shot by Siao Blackwood after 37 minutes and then Dominic Ogun miss hit a header around the post on the stroke of half time. On the balance of play, the half time score was a fair reflection of the game

The Swans started the second half the more positive side and after 50 minutes Tarome Hemmings found himself in but could not beat Watkins who saved well. Ogun again missed a golden opportunity at the far post but couldn’t get a shot in on target and then 66 minutes Watkins was able to block an attempt by Dalhouse. Town attacks were becoming a little rarer but on 74 minutes

Treadwell got on the end of a Scott Heard cross but his header was not on target. At the other Town had to be grateful to defender Peter Wedgeworth who cleared the ball off the line after 79 minutes. On 86 minutes Pulman got on the end of a cross but his shot went just wide. Town’s winner came in injury time when Pulman sent over a cross, the ball bounced around the penalty area and Treadwell was on hand to head in.

Injury hit Town had worked hard to come away with three points on a glorious afternoon at the Belmont.
