Whitstable Town 0 Hythe Town 2
Ryman Football league Division One (South)
Saturday 25th October 2014
It was a give away at Whitstable on Saturday as two defensive howlers were pounced on by ex Whitstable striker Ashley Miller to give Hythe Town a 2-0 win.
Whitstable started very sluggishly and it was Hythe who had all the early attacks. On two minutes Michael Yianni shot over at the far post. Then two minutes later , Miller shot
through a crowded penalty area and the ball was well saved by Luke Watkins in the Whitstable goal. The hosts had their first attempt on seven minutes, Reiss Crimmen hit the ball with his left foot but it went over. On ten minutes Hythe took the lead when Luke Doherty gave away the ball to Miller who took the opportunity and clinically slotted past Watkins. The visitors could have been two up four minutes later when James Morrish headed down but the ball ricocheted against the post. Town settled down a little and were unlucky when no one could get on the end of a long Crimmen throw. On 22 minutes Doherty had a header that came back off the bar but Kane Rowland couldn’t get his shot from the rebound on target. Whitstable continued to attack and on 36 minutes Luke Girt on the far post looped the ball just over the bar.
Hythe continued to look dangerous on the break and Yianni perhaps should have done better when running onto the ball and ballooned his shot over the bar. One more chance for Whitstable as Ian Pulman hit a free kick right on the stroke of half time but ball was easily collected by Hythe goalkeeper Roddy Hayward.
Whitstable started the second half looking for an equaliser. On 48 minutes Rowland shot over the bar . On the hour Hythe’s Morrish blasted over but a minute later Scott Heard playing his two hundredth game for Whitstable broke through the Hythe defence firing home. However controversially the goal was ruled out for an alleged hand ball. A minute later the hosts were again unlucky when Nick Treadwell had an attempt fumbled by goalkeeper Hayward but the ball was hooked away by a defender. On 65 minutes, Pulman had a curling shot that went wide of the target. The game was over thirteen minutes from the end when instead of clearing the ball the Whitstable defence tried to pass the ball out. However Miller pounced on the opportunity and walked the ball into net. Doherty did have one chance to pull one back but hooked the ball wide.
It was a disappointing game for Whitstable as their blip after a good start to the season continued.
