Whitstable Town 0 Tunbridge Wells 2
FA Cup (Sponsored by Budweiser) Preliminary Round Replay
Tuesday 3rd September 2013
A very disappointing evening for Whitstable Town as they were dumped out of the FA Cup against last year’s FA Vase finalists Tunbridge Wells.
Whitstable had the first opportunity in the tenth minute when Craig Maguire sent in a shot but the attempt was pushed away by Wells keeper Craig Oladogba. Four minutes later Town found themselves a goal behind when Jason Bourne was brought down in the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation to point to the spot. Up stepped Joe Fuller who blasted the ball past Luke Watkins to give Wells the lead. Town were on the attack again after 20 minutes when John Guest sent a header over the bar. Josh Stanford who was playing his last game for Tunbridge Wells before emigrating broke free but was blocked by
Watkins. Things got worse for the hosts on 24 minutes when a corner was met by Joe Fuller who had free header from a corner and thumped the ball in to put the visitors two up. A minute later Town could have been level when a Guest header was saved by Oladogba. Two minutes later Takaloo hooked the ball wide as the ball bounced around the penalty area. On the half hour Maguire could not quite get the ball back on the far post and thee shot went wide. Tunbridge Wells continued to look dangerous and after 35 minutes Jack Harris had a shot blocked away for a corner. Four minutes later Brett Ince had another chance for the visitors but his shot went over the bar. Tunbridge Wells went in at half time with a deserved two-nil lead.
Nicky Southall made wholesale changes at half time using all his substitutes. After 57 minutes Town had an opportunity as Jordan Wells headed the ball goal ward but it was tipped over by Oladogba. A minute later Scott Heard had a dipping cross come shot pushed over the bar by Oladogba. On 64 minutes the Wells keeper was in the action again when he again pushed the ball over the bar from a Steve Haffner free kick. Lee Radford then had a chance for the Wells which went wide. Town were pressing hard to
get back in the game and after 69 minutes a Scott Heard cross found Charlie Smith but he couldn’t quite get his shot away. On 73 minutes Stanford fired in a shot for the wells but his attempt went wide. At the other end Heard a thumping shot from Heard was deflected wide after 75 minutes. In the last minute Maguire had the last opportunity when he sent in a far post header but again Oladogba was on hand to save.
In the end the same problem of converting chances came to haunt the Town as they missed out again at the first hurdle in the FA Cup.
