Whitstable Town 0 Folkestone Invicta 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Tuesday 11th August 2015
Whitstable Town gave a much improved performance on Tuesday evening when they were unlucky not to get a point against one of the title favourites, Folkestone Invicta as they went down 1-0 at the Belmont.
It was a sixth minute goal from Ian Draycott who ran in and managed to find the back of the net from a narrow angle that was to prove the difference between the two teams. Town however did start to create chances as it was Kane Rowland who crossed to Chris Seenan who headed just wide. On thirteen minutes Ollie Gray fed the ball to Scott Heard but his attempt was blocked. Within a couple of minutes Ira Jackson cut in and shot but Folkestone keeper Tim Roberts held the ball well. Folkestone continued to look dangerous and it was Jordan Wright who fired a shot straight at Adam Highsted in the Whitstable goal. On 34 minutes Town were on the attack again when Heard put in a deep cross but Joe Kennett’s header went just over the bar. On 36 minutes it was Curtis Robinson hit a long range shot but it was again collected by Roberts.
Folkestone created the first opportunity of the second half as Highsted denied Carl Rook with a fine save. On the hour the ball came out to Liam Friend who volleyed over the Whitstable bar. Whitstable continued to threaten as on 62 minutes Rowland turned and shot but his attempt was blocked and then on 70 minutes Nick Treadwell firmly headed onto the top of the cross bar and away. At the other end a header from Jon Pilbeam went wide of the target and Ronnie Dolan shot over the bar. The last ten minutes saw Whitstable pile on the pressure looking for the equaliser and despite a number of corners it was not to come and Folkestone were able to hold on.
The final whistle marked a second defeat but a much brighter showing that promises more for Saturday’s game at home to Carshalton Athletic.
