Carshalton Athletic 1 Whitstable Town 2
FA Carlsberg Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round
Saturday 16th November 2013
Whitstable Town did the club proud as they progressed to the FA Carlsberg Trophy 1st Round Proper for the first time in their history with a deserved 2-1 win at Ryman Premier Division Carshalton Athletic on Saturday.
The game started with Whitstable on the attack with the first opportunity coming after three minutes when a Steve Hafner cross found Ian Cox whose header when down and bounced upover the bar. Three minutes later John Guest had a shot blocked with a rebound falling to Hafner who blasted high over the target. Town continued on the attack and Ashley Baverstock moved in from the left but his shot was blocked. Carshalton had their first chance after 12 minutes when the ball fell to
Adriano Moraes and following a melee in the Town area but his attempt also went over the bar. Again a minute later Matthew Males could not make the most of a chance which went “a begging”. On 17 minutes Town were back on the attack but Scott Heard could only blast over from the edge of the penalty area. On 23 minutes Town keeper Luke Watkins was called on to save well from a shot from the right by Kieran Woodley. The visitors fell behind following a rare mistake by Ian Cox. His clearance only fell to Moraes who fired home. Two minutes before the interval one of the best pieces of individual skill saw Jake Mackenzie weave his way to by line to pull the ball back to Heard who blasted over. The half ended with the hosts a goal to the good.
The second half started with Town pressing. Craig Thompson shot from the edge of the penalty area just wide of the target after 55 minutes and then two minutes later Tommy Bradford shot wide at the other end. Laurence Harvey came on after 67 minutes to replace Hafner and had an immediate
impact on the game as he used his height to get on the end of a cross but he didn’t get enough on his attempt to test Dean Snedker in the Carshalton goal. A minute later Lewis Taylor headed wide at the other end. Whitstable were not to be denied and they got the equaliser they deserved after 75 minutes when Guest got to the ball in the penalty area and forced it over the line. Town continued on the attack and Heard fired over from 25 yards after 82 minutes before Thompson got in at the far post after 84 minutes to get on the end of a Heard cross to shoot home.
This sealed a deserved victory for Town and a place in the draw for the next round which will be drawn on Monday.
