Tooting & Mitcham United 6 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 26th October 2013
Whitstable were swept away in the second half to suffer a six nil hammering at Tooting & Mitcham United on Saturday.
Little in the first half suggested the avalanche suffered by Town in the second half. In fact Town had the first opportunity in the 19th minute when Craig Thompson broke free but didn’t get a final shot away and home keeper Gareth Williams saved easily. Tooting didn’t have a chance until 23 minutes when they took the lead. Firstly Max Noble had a shot that was blocked . The ball rebounded to Frankie Sawyer who fired home. Three minutes later Thompson had an opportunity when he shot from outside the area but his attempt went high and wide. On 42 minutes Tooting nearly gifted Whitstable an equaliser when
defender Colin Hartburn under pressure attempted a clearance but he mistimed it and the ball bounced just wide. Just on half time Josh Turner shot through a crowded penalty area but the ball was easily gathered by Luke Watkins and then in injury time Nathan Gordon had a attempt cleared off the line following a goal mouth melee. The home side went in at half time just about deserving their one goal lead.
Four minutes after half time Town looked to have equalised when Scott Heard sent in a free kick that found its way into the back of the net. The goal was ruled out due to an illegal challenge on the keeper. On 51 minutes a cross from the ever dangerous Noble found Cecil Jee at the near post who just failed to put the ball the right side of the post. A minute later Thompson had a shot blocked which rebounded to Ashley Beverstock but his attempt went over the bar. Then came the start of the melt down.
Noble again put in a ball to the near post after 54 minutes and Jee this time found the net. Then on 63 minutes Town were three down when man of the match Noble broke through from the left and fired his shot past Watkins. It was soon four when on 69 minutes Jordan Cheadle had a free kick just outside the penalty area. His shot sailed into the top corner of the net. On 72 minutes Tooting had another chance but Bashieu Alimi fired straight at Watkins. With 13 minutes to go Town did have a chance when Thompson put in a cross that found Baverstock but his attempt went wide. Then on 79 minutes Dan Keyte had shot from outside the penalty that was saved by Williams. With six minutes to go a challenge in the penalty area on Peter Wedgeworth led to referee pointing to the spot and Sol Pinnock sent Watkins the wrong way to extend Tooting’s lead. Sawyer rubbed salt in Town’s wounds when Sawyer fired home Tooting’s sixth on 89 minutes.
It was a dismal game for the visitors who need to urgently regroup before Tuesday’s tie at home to Horsham.
