Corinthian-Casuals 1 Whitstable Town 2
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 1st November 2014
Whitstable returned to winning ways as they deservedly took three points on Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 win at Corinthian-Casuals.
Town started the game on the front foot having the first opportunity after three minutes when Joe Kennett curled a shot which went just wide following a deflection. Casuals had their first attempt when Dave Hodges headed down but Watkins blocked well. Whitstable continued to look the more dangerous as Kane Rowland coming in from the right hit the ball just wide with his left foot on 22 minutes. Five minutes later Watkins had to be alert as a shot came in from Jake Gill and following a deflection the Town keeper had to change direction to save. A minute later however, Whitstable went ahead when Peter
Wedgeworth broke through and unselfishly fed Ian Pulman who slid the ball home. Casuals did have a chance to equalise a minute later when Mahrez Bettache scuffed a shot wide. On the half hour Kane Rowland shot wide for Town and then on 37 minutes Bamoussa Cissen at the other end shot weakly at Watkins who easily gathered the ball. With three minutes to go until the interval, Ollie Gray crossed to find firstly Rowland who couldn’t get his shot away and then Pulman was unable to convert.
Casuals had more purpose at the start of the second half as Jamie Byatt tested Watkins with a header where the Town keeper saved well and then on 64 minutes Jordan Vidal shot straight Watkins. On 68 minutes a long range shot from Gill went wide. Town’s defence during this period stayed resolute and on 75 minutes Wedgeworth broke through but was blocked by Casuals keeper Danny Bracken who blocked well. Town were to increase their lead with five minutes to go when debutant substitute Conner Coyne was brought down in the penalty area. Up stepped Tom Loynes who sent the ball into the corner of the net. Town did have a scare when three minutes later Casuals substitute, Michael Salako rose above the Town defence to head home to narrow the gap. However Whitstable held on to take three very useful points.
