Redhill 2 Whitstable Town 3

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 23rd August 2014

Whitstable Town’s excellent start to the season continued at Redhill on Saturday as they came from behind to win 3-2 in an entertaining encounter.

Both teams seemed prepared to attack and Redhill had their first opportunity after four minutes when Gavin Gordon headed wide at the far post. Within three minutes Town had their first attempt which saw Joe Kennett shoot straight at Redhill keeper Tom Betts after a melee in the Redhill penalty area. Redhill took the lead on

nine minutes when Joe Bingham hooked a shot into the corner of the net past Luke Watkins. The lead only lasted three minutes before Ian Pulman was brought down in the penalty area. The penalty was given and Ryan Golding fired the ball past Betts to bring the scores level. Within three minutes Redhill had an opportunity to regain the lead but a rasping shot by Tom Bold was held well by Watkins. The game now settled down and next real chance came on 32 minutes when Gordon headed down but the ball hit the post and went away.  Redhill had the best of the rest of the half and had two chances in quick succession. Firstly on 37 minutes when  Bold hit a free kick straight at Watkins and then Jordan Anderson blasted over from eight yards. One more chance for Town on 41 minutes when Scott Heard hit a ball well over the bar from 25 yards.

The second half  saw Town have a chance on 49 minutes when Peter Wedgeworth hit a free kick from 25 yards just wide and then on 54 minutes Tyrone Pink fed Joe Bingham but the Redhill winger spooned the ball over the bar. The game continued end to end. On the hour Chis O’Flahety forced a save out of Watkins and then on 62 minutes Town were denied twice as Heard had a shot cleared off the line and then Luke Girt had his shot saved.  Heard was again in the action when he saw Betts off his line and lobbed the keeper but the ball hit the post.  A minute later Joe Goldsmith hit a curling shot just wide of the Town post from twenty yards. With ten minutes to go Redhill’s Tre Mitford fed Pink but he got under the ball and fired over from eight yards. Town finally took the lead after 82 minutes with an exquisite shot from Tom Loynes from outside the penalty area  dipped under the cross bar. Within three minutes Pulman had pounced on a mistake by keeper Betts leaving him to slot the ball into an empty net.  Redhill did not lay down and die with O’Flaherty curling a free kick on 88 minutes. The ball hit the inside of the upright and deflected into the net.

Town were to hold onto to all three points and move up to fifth place after five games and still an unbeaten record.
