Erith & Belvedere 2
Whitstable Town 0
Pre Season Friendly
Saturday 20th July 2013
Two fantastic strikes by Erith & Belvedere striker Richard Morgan were good enough to give “The Deres” a two nil win at home to Whitstable Town on Saturday. Town put out a team of mainly under 21 fringe players and trialists with a number of the regular first team not playing.
Whitstable had the first attack after two minutes but in a goal mouth melee nobody was able to get a shot away. Four minutes later the hosts had their first chance when Morgan hit a speculative long range effort which went well wide of the target. On eight minutes the lively Beau Taylor put in a cross for the visitors but Dave Raggett could only head straight at Jack Bradshaw in the Erith goal. Then two minutes later Morgan showed his first piece of magic as he sent a 25 yard shot past Town keeper Ashley Bourne into the corner of the net to give Erith the lead. The action continued in the 13th minute when Town left back Ross Webb headed over the bar. Then came Morgan’s second
piece of brilliance after 20 minutes as he sent another 25 yard scorcher into the corner of the net to give Erith a two goal lead. Erith continued to press and after 27 minutes Mo Contah sent a shot off target. A minute later there was more problems for the Town defence as a cross by Aaron Jeffery went across the goal mouth but nobody was hand to put the ball away. Seven minutes from half time Raggett sent a cross in that put Bradshaw under pressure from Steve Hafner but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper. The two nil score line was a fair reflection of the first half.
The start of the second half saw numerous changes to both line ups. Town in the second period were much stronger in defence and opportunities at both end were very limited. On the hour Taylor had
another chance for the Town but sent his shot well over the bar. There were few other real chances throughout the half as the game turned into a midfield battle. This was until Sam Gent unleashed a strike from 25 yards for “The Deres”. The shot looked goal bound until Town substitute Luke Watkins manage to get his hand to the ball and magnificently push it over the bar.
It was a good work out for the young team who were seeking to impress but would expect a number of changes for the game against Dover Athletic on Tuesday night.
