Whitstable Town 2 Cray Wanderers 2 – Saturday 11th August 2012- Pre Season Friendly

Pre season ended with an entertaining 2-2 draw with Cray Wanderers at the Belmont last Saturday.  There was a real improvement from previous pre season games and a lot to encourage for the new season, not least the return to form of Ian Pulman.

Pulman put the Town ahead in the 3rd minute following a mix up in the Cray defence. Their attempts to clear the ball left goalkeeper, Alan Walker exposed. His attempt to head the ball away failed and Pulman was left with an empty net to put Town one up. However the lead only lasted six minutes as Cray striker, Danny Phillips broke free only to appear to be brought down by Laurence Harvey. The referee controversially pointed to the penalty spot and Phillips slotted away his spot kick to bring the scores level. The first half ended 1-1 with both sides having opportunities to gain the lead but the half time score was a fair reflection of the play to date.  The second half started brightly for Town with Dane Luchford having an opportunity in the 48th minute only to see it saved by the keeper. In the 58th minute trialist goalkeeper Rob French made a great block to prevent Cray taking the lead.  Then in the 71st minute Damian Abel placed a 20 yard free kick towards the corner of the Cray goal only to see his attempt pushed around the post by the Cray keeper.

On 79 minutes, a touch of brilliance brought about Town’s second goal. Dan Wisker won the ball and put his pass through to Ian Pulman. Pulman with his back to goal turned and unleashed a shot into the top corner of net giving the keeper no chance.  Only a minute later Cray were awarded a penalty when one of their strikers was brought to the ground in the penalty area. The resultant penalty was not the best and substitute goal keeper Nick Shaw brought of a good save to keep Town in front.

Cray however brought the scores level with a minute of normal time to go when Cray captain found himself through clear on goal. He was able to lob the ball past Shaw in to the back of the net. Town did have one last opportunity when Pulman slammed a shot just over the bar. Now it is on to the start of the season proper.
