Merstham 5 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Thursday 27th March 2014
Whitstable Town was taught a lesson in finishing on Thursday night as they were hammered 5-0 at Merstham
The game started at great pace with the first chance coming after seven minutes when Taurean Roberts hit a shot straight at Luke Watkins. Town had their first opportunity after nine minutes when Laurence Harvey got on the end of a Steve Hafner free kick but his header went straight at Merstham keeper Brannon Daly. On 18 minutes Fabio Saraiva shot from 30 yards straight at keeper Watkins. After 23 minutes John Guest hit a header just past the post and then at the other end Roberts shot just over the bar after 25 minutes. Merstham eventually took
the lead after 27 minutes when Dean Gunner slotted the ball past Watkins. Folkes then had a shot blocked by Watkins two minutes later. Merstham continued to control the game and after 36 minutes Tutu Henriques had a shot tipped over well by Watkins. Then Saraiva really got involved as he firstly curled a shot wide after 38 minutes and then a minute later he got to the ball and slotted it home to give Merstham a two goal lead. He then took a free kick which went just over the bar. Town did have a couple of chances before half time when a minute before the break Matt Martin got his foot to a loose ball but it was collected by Daly. Then on 45 minutes new signing Ashley Miller broke into the penalty and hammered a shot against the post.
The second half started disastrously as two minutes into the half when defender Dean Gunner broke into the Town penalty area to tap the ball away for
Merstham’s third. It got even worse two minutes later when a Saraiva corner found Simon Cooper who diverted the ball into the net. The game continued at great pace but it was not until the 70th minute that Merstham rubbed salt into the wounds when Roberts found himself free and lobbed the ball over Watkins into the net. Town did have one shot when substitute Beau Taylor shot but it was easily saved by Daly. Town did continue to pressure to towards the end but it was far too little too late.
It was a” bad evening at the office” and Town must now put this behind them for Saturday.
