Whitstable Town 1 Sittingbourne 2
Ryman League Division One South
Saturday 13th October 2012
Sittingbourne took all three points in a very hard competitive derby game against Whitstable Town on Saturday. The early exchanges were fairly even with opportunities at both ends. As early as the 2nd minute Buster Smissen drove a shot wide for the hosts. Six minutes later a fast attack by Sittingbourne was snuffed out by the Whitstable defence.
In the 20th minute Ryan Golding broke the deadlock when he fired a shot into the corner past diving Whitstable keeper Robert French. The lead was only to last four minutes as Town were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Nicky Southall delivered the free kick to find Smissen whose shot slid past Sittingbourne keeper Adam Molloy. The half time score of one-one was a fair reflection of the first half.
Town created a couple of opportunities early in the second half. After 51 minutes, Southall forced the ball into the penalty box to find Smissen whose shot was easily saved by keeper, Molloy. But three minutes later Sittingbourne were awarded a penalty when French came out and was adjudged to foul the Sittingbourne striker. Up stepped Golding who struck the penalty well into the corner to put the Bourne into the lead.
That proved to be the winner as Town continued to press but could not break down a stout Sittingbourne defence. A disappointing afternoon for Whitstable who need to be more incisive in attack to put away the chances they had. Sittingbourne were strong on the break and were delighted at the end with their win.
