Saturday 7th September 2013

Whitstable Town made their first aircraft journey for a competitive game as they travelled to Guernsey on Saturday but came away pointless from Footes Lane.

The problems started for Town before the kick off as Joe Kane was injured in the pre match warm up and then further re- organisation was required on four minutes when Craig Maguire had to go off injured with knee problems. This created early problems as Town had to readjust. They had started on the back foot as Guernsey attacked from the kick off and had their first opportunity after three minutes when man of the match Ross Allen forced a save from Luke Watkins as his shot flew towards the Town goal. Allen was again in the action ten minutes later when he shot across the face of the goal but his attempt went wide.  Allen eventually got his just reward on 13 minutes when he carved through the Town defence to slot the ball home and give

Guernsey the lead.  Throughout this early period of the game the hosts continued to pile on the pressure and after 22 minutes Marc McGrath turned and shot but the ball went straight at Watkins who gathered the ball. Town had their first attack after 25 minutes when a Nicky Southall free kick nearly found Jordan Wells but the striker could not quite get on the end of the cross. On 29 minutes McGrath had a another chance from a free kick but his shot went high over the bar. Again on 36 minutes Allen was back in the action but couldn’t his shot away and Watkins was able to gather the ball. Southall sent in another cross at the other end which found Steve Hafner but he could not get his make his opportunity count.   With five minutes to go before half time Glyn Dyer shot from the edge of the area but his attempt curled wide. The on 42 minutes the home side increased their lead when McGrath provided a cross that found Matt Loaring who found the net from close range. Town however were able to pull a goal back in injury time when a run from Scott Heard who found Southall. He managed to find Charlie Smith who fired the ball in off the underside of the bar. Claims that the ball had not crossed the line were waived away as was late proved correct by the video evidence.  This could have provided Town with a lifeline in the second half.

After the restart there was a period with few chances until the 55th minute when McGrath spooned a shot over the bar. Allen then broke free for the hosts but couldn’t get his shot away. On the hour Heard had a chance as he cut in but his shot was well saved by Chris Tardif in the Guernsey goal. On 67 minute Town who were  now looking more dangerous and had an opportunity when Joe Lester e managed to toe a ball that beat keeper Tardif but went just wide of the target. Guernsey then had the opportunity to increase their lead but Nigel Hutton had a shot that went over the bar. Town did not give up and Heard cut in but could not get his shot away with five minutes to go and the same player, a couple of minutes later, had a shot deflected away for a goal kick.

It had been a difficult afternoon in front of a big crowd of 1025 so the Town need to regroup before the game against Ramsgate on Tuesday.
