Whitstable Town 4 South Park 2
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 4th April 2015
Whitstable Town eventually overcame some scares to run out 4-2 winners at home to South Park on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts started the brighter and had their first attempt on three minutes when Ollie Gray tapped the ball over the bar. On eight minutes Jake Mackenzie put in a cross that found Kane Rowland
who headed the ball just over the bar. South Park had to wait until the tenth minute for their first opportunity when the ball rebound off the ever dangerous Chris Smith into Town keeper Luke Watkins hands. Watkins was then at his best as he blocked from David Smith. However it was the visitors who broke the deadlock on 18 minutes when Jack Higgins managed to force the ball in from a corner. The lead only lasted five minutes as a cross from Tom Loynes found defender, Daniel Guscott, who smashed a header into his own goal under no pressure. Whitstable however took the lead on 25 minutes when Joe Kane fired home as the ball bounced around the penalty area. One more chance a quarter of an hour from the break saw Luke Girt fire over for the hosts from long distance.
The second half saw the early opportunity come for the visitors as Chris Smith curled a shot that was excellently palmed away by Watkins. On 55 minutes Town increased their lead as ball in, from Man of the Match Scott Heard, found Rowland who managed to force the ball home from close range. South Park reduced the deficit on 66 minutes when the ball came loose to Chris Smith who finished cleverly as he fired past Watkins. Whitstable then pressed to regain a two goal lead as firstly Loynes crossed to Kane but he fired over and then Loynes got past Jordan Markey in the South Park goal but could not get his shot away. However South Park still threatened and had two opportunities as firstly David Smith had a shot well blocked by Mackenzie and then Justin David fired over as he met a cross to the far post with five minutes to go. It was a break that sealed the points for Whitstable on 87 minutes when Heard surged through the South Park defence and then unselfishly laid the ball off to Rowland who side footed home. One more chance came a minute form the end of normal time when Rowland was denied his hat trick by the post and Nick Treadwell fired over the rebound.
The win took Whitstable to sixth place as they have now guaranteed their best finish since their promotion to the Ryman League nine years ago.
