FA Carlsberg Trophy 2nd Qualifying Round Replay

Whitstable Town set a new record on Wednesday evening as they progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy beating Hythe Town two one in their 2nd Qualifying Round replay at the Belmont.

During the first half Town had the more meaningful chances. On ten minutes a cross come shot from James Morrish was easily collected byythe    H Hythe keeper Dan Eason. A minute later Craig Thompson sent in a soft shot  that did not trouble the

Hythe keeper. Hythe had their first opportunity after 18 minutes when Lee Winfield hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area but the ball went over the bar. On 25 minutes Charlie Smith sent in a ball to Joe Kane but his shot went wide  of the target. The hosts  took the lead after 34 minutes when Charlie Smith had a shot saved by Eason but the ball rebounded to man of the math Morrish who fired home. Whitstable could have extended their lead two minutes later when a Steve Hafner corner found Kane who headed over the bar.  There were no more real chances as Whitstable went in with a deserved one goal lead.

The second half as on Saturday provided much more action. Jake Mackenzie, who tormented the Hythe defence, was brought down in the penalty area after 53 minutes. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.  Up stepped Craig Thompson who hit a straight  penalty but it was easily saved by Eason.  Hythe were then reduced to ten men as Lee Winfield was sent off for a second yellow card. On 57 minutes John Guest got on the end of a Hafner cross but his header went over the bar. Then came a second penalty for Whitstable as Mackenzie weaved through the Hythe defence but was again brought down. This time Morrish took responsibility but his kick was magnificently saved by Eason to his left. Whitstable could have been left to rue the missed opportunities as ten man Hythe equalised after 66 minutes when Taser Hussan curled a free kick on the edge

of the penalty around the wall and past Luke Watkins into the right hand corner of the net. Hythe then continued to press but were nearly caught on the break as substitute Ashley Baverstock shot wide after 70 minutes.  Then with ten minutes to go came Whitstable’s winner as Ollie Brown shot was saved by Eason but Baverstock was on hand to fire home.  Hythe were then reduced to nine men as Jamie Callado was sent off again for a second yellow card with a minute of normal time remaining.  Whitstable were able to see out the rest of the game to progress to the 3rd Qualifying Round (the furthest they have been in this competition).

Town now face an away trip to Carshalton Athletic in the next round as they seek more cup glory.
