Sittingbourne 1 Whitstable Town 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Tuesday 19th February 2013
Whitstable bounced back from a disappointing result last Saturday to gain a well deserved point at Sittingbourne on Tuesday evening. In fact with a bit more luck and better finishing they should have taken three points.
An entertaining fixture started with Sittingbourne on the attack. A 2nd minute cross by Ryan Cooper found Hicham Akhazzan whose header looped over the bar. Town had their first attack after five minutes when Scott Heard broke free and shot straight at Adam Molloy in the Sittingbourne goal. Three minutes later Buster Smissen had an attempt under pressure but sent his shot over the bar. Town then started to dictate the game and after 20 minutes Danny Williams broke free. His shot as blocked and the rebound fell to Heard who sent in another shot which was gathered well by
Molloy. After 26 minutes James Morrish struck a shot from 20 yards. It seemed to be going goal bound before Molloy pulled off a magnificent save. Six minutes later the hard working Smissen had a shot on the turn that drifted wide. Nick Southall then had a free kick just outside the penalty area that curled just over the bar. Sittingbourne then had a spell just before half time where they created a couple of chances. After 36 minutes Joe Taylor got in a position where it looked easier to score but the ball looped over the target. Taylor again, three minutes before half time sent a shot wide. The stalemate remained until half time.
A minute into the second half Sittingbourne broke the deadlock when Akhazzan sent in a corner that Nick Treadwell challenged for the ball and sent his attempt past Nick Shaw. Unfortunately Treadwell had to leave the pitch due injury following his goal. Town then started to push forward and after 59 minutes Southall had an attempt that went wide. Town then equalised after 64 minutes. Smissen had a shot that deflected back to Williams who sent his attempt into the back of the net. The game continued with Town creating the better opportunities. After 76 minutes Dan Hanshaw had a free header but was unable to find the target. However as the fog began to drift in at the end of the game Sittingbourne striker Ryan Golding sent an
attempt looping over the bar after 86 minutes. In injury time Town could have sealed all three points a Heard shot was blocked and then Hanshaw looked to have scored but the ball was cleared away off the line.
The final whistle blew with Town taking a point in a game that was thankfully in total contrast to the previous Saturday.
