Leatherhead 1 Whitstable Town 2
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 21st September 2013
Whitstable Town won the points against high flying Leatherhead as a late Jack Simon strike gave the visitors all three points.
It was an impressive performance from the Town which they started on the attack. After just a minute Scott Heard broke down the right and sent a cross straight across the goal mouth but there was no one on hand to get a touch. Three minutes later Leatherhead had their first attack but Allan Tait could not get any force in his shot and Luke Watkins in the Town goal was able to block. Heard was back in the action a minute later when he broke again on the right but couldn’t quite get his shot away.
The end to end game saw more action after eleven minutes when John Guest who gave a masterful performance at the back blocked well as Kev Terry tried to break. On 14 minutes ex Sittingbourne striker Tom Bradbrook fired wide from a couple of yards out when it seemed easier to score. The game then settled down with few chances until 26 minutes when Paul Semakula hit a shot straight at Watkins who easily gathered the ball. Bad news for Town on 41 minutes when Bradbrook got on the end of a looping cross and managed to head the ball past Watkins to give Leatherhead the lead. The half ended with the Tanners on top. Terry broke free but was blocked well by Watkins. Leatherhead went in at half time just about deserving their one goal lead.
Town started the half on the attack and after 51 minutes got a deserved equaliser when Guest managed to head the ball past Deren Ibrahim in the Leatherhead goal from a free kick from Steve Hafner. Leatherhead could not make the most of the opportunities that came their way, as on the hour a Bradbrook header was directed straight at Watkins and then again after 64 minutes he headed wide of the target. He was in the action again three minutes later he broke free on the left but the in-form Watkins was again on hand to save. With 15 minutes to go Hafner sent a free kick that beat keeper Ibrahim but a Leatherhead defender was on hand to clear the ball off the line. The Tanners were back on the attack after 79 minutes when Terry had a free kick from just outside the penalty area. He shot the ball straight into the wall and then hit the
rebound over the bar. With two minutes to go Town then got a bit of luck that has eluded them this season when Jack Simon hit a speculative long range shot which bounced awkwardly beating Ibrahim to give Town all three points.
It had been a solid performance where Whitstable had soaked up pressure at times but always looked dangerous going forward. It was a pleasant journey home for the Town with three hard earned points.
