Maidstone United 0 Whitstable Town 1
Hurlimann Kent League Division One
Saturday 2nd March 2013
With the expectation of a very entertaining game to come Town travelled to the Gallagher stadium, and on arrival the first impression was – what a stadium- with a ground and a pitch that was immaculate. With the whole squad to choose from, town went into the game very confident.
Town were very aware that Maidstone had in their team two very talented strikers and after Whitstable had two players booked for “afters” after a Maidstone player had put a very late challenge. Both Maidstone and Whitstable relished the chance to play the ball around the pitch with Town having the better of the chances and they should of gone into half time at least a goal up, missing several chances and with their own keeper having little to do.
The second half started very busily ,with both teams again playing the ball around superbly. However the game changed on 65 minutes when Town were awarded a penalty for a late tackle just inside the area. Up stepped the Whitstable penalty taker who missed with possibly the softest penalty ever seen in the Kent League.
Within five minutes a great ball through the Maidstone defence was latched onto by Hill whose shot lobbed the keeper and Town were one up. The goal kick-started Whitstable as they got better as the game progressed and Maidstone appeared to have run out of ideas in the last twenty five minutes with Town dominating. Both sides made substitutions and Town hit the bar in the last five minutes. The Town management wishes , special praise to every one of the town squad as they beat a Maidstone side containing a number of talented academy players. Whitstable have beaten them twice based on a squad with a superb work ethic.
