Whitstable Town Reserves 2 Herne Bay Reserves 1
Hurlimann Kent League Division One
Saturday 6th April 2013
With the bitter disappointment of last Tuesday night’s defeat in the Division One Cup semi final still hurting, Town were desperate not to disappoint and they didn’t let anyone down as they ran out two one winners. Right from the start of the game, Town’s two young midfielders were never troubled by Bay’s ex-first teamers, seemingly taking the ball off them when they wanted. Town’s defence was not troubled and after 30 minutes they took the lead with a header from a corner. They proceeded to control the rest of the half, .
The second half started the same for town , with ex-Town players Steven Lloyd and Gareth Cornhill being put under constant pressure. Bay however scored from a corner after 65 minutes from ex first teamer , Hanson. That seemed to push the Whitstable team onwards and they seemed to spend the rest of the game on the attack. The winning goal came after 70 minutes when the visitors keeper caught the ball, only to drop it on to the foot of a Town player who fired home. The goal had been coming and the team that had played the football, rather than the long ball won a deserved victory.
Physio Chris Gritty said after the game:
“Right from the start we were the better side. Up against plenty of ex Town players including Kyle Wisker, Lloyd, Cornhill, Martin and Okundaliye, town’s younger fitter side had the lion’s share of play and never looked like losing the game. With the selection of youngsters playing well, they deserves the praise they got after the game.”
