Worthing 3 Whitstable Town 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 11th October 2014
Whitstable Town were left to rue missed chances and poor defending as they went down 3-1 at Worthing on Saturday.
Both sides started cautiously and it wasn’t until a quarter of an hour that Worthing had their first opportunity when Harvey Sparkes shot but pulled his attempt wide of the target. On 23 minutes it looked like the hosts were going to take the lead but a last gasp Joe Kennett clearance on the line prevented the goal. From the clearance Worthing
attacked again and had a big appeal for a penalty turned down. The possession remained even but the chances were all coming for Worthing. Curtis Gayler had the next attempt that went high and wide. Town had to wait to the half an hour mark before their first real chance when Kane Rowland shot straight at keeper Jack Fagan. Two minutes later Scott Heard turned inside but his shot went well over. Town were now beginning to show promise and a pinpoint ball from Tom Loynes found Heard on the attack but the Town midfielder crossed rather than shot and the ball was cleared away for a corner. Worthing had the last opportunity of the half when Trevor McCreadie shot straight at Town keeper Luke Watkins.
The second half started in a similar vein and it was Worthing who had the first chance on 51 minutes when Gayler shot but the ball was easily gathered by Watkins. Then came two minutes that turned the game in the hosts favour. Firstly after 59 minutes Sparkes sent in a deep cross from the left which was met with a McCreadie header that was fired into the back of the net to give Worthing the lead. Within two minutes McCreadie was on the score sheet again when he was fed the ball from Gayler and the striker slammed the ball past Watkins. Town did show some fight as Ian Pulman hit a shot over the bar from the edge of the area. Then a run after 75 minutes by Peter Wedgeworth saw the Town left back shoot. The ball was fumbled by Fagan and Town were back in the game as the ball crossed the goal line. Town’s fight back only lasted two minutes as Mcreadie broke free again. His attempt was cleared out to Omar Bugiel who slotted the ball home. Town did have a last chance to draw back into the game when Pulman was brought down in the area with four minutes to go. However, Pulman got up to take the penalty but blasted high over the bar. He did have another chance deep into injury time but his shot went curling just wide.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Whitstable who must now concentrate on picking up their home form on Tuesday against Folkestone Invicta.
