Whitstable Town 0 Thurrock 1

Pre Season Fixture

Saturday 18th July 2015

Whitstable Town put in a much improved performance as they went down 1-0 in an evenly balanced game against Thurrock on Saturday afternoon.

The early exchanges were even and the first opportunity came for the visitors on ten minutes when Steven Carvell attempted an overhead kick which went easily into Whitstable keeper Adam  Highstead arms. Five minutes later Whitstable had their first chance when a crossed ball found Scott Heard who shot wide.  Within sixty seconds Town attacked again when a ball from Kieron Campbell was put into Sam His

shot was easily saved by Rhys Madden.  Both teams continued to have their share of attacks and it was on 17 minutes that Thurrock’s Charlie Stimson hit a long range shot wide. Highstead then had to be at his best to palm over Abo Eisu’s attempt. At the other end Sam Callender shot into Madden’s arms. On 36 minutes Thurrock’s to Joe Christou drove wide and then Phil Anderson hit a dipping shot just over the bar in injury time.

The second half started in the same vein and Lewis Spence shot over the Whitstable bar.  Soon after Sam Bewick had an opportunity for Whitstable but

his shot lacked power and was easily collected by Madden.  Whitstable were now starting to apply more pressure and Campbell sent in a rasping shot that was deflected onto the cross bar and away. Ira Jackson was next to cause problems for the away defence as his attempt forced a save out Madden on 70 minutes. A minute late Town attacked again as skipper Nick Treadwell put in a ball to Charlie Smith who headed over.   The defining minute of the game came with a quarter of an hour to go. Firstly Michael Hurcombe was unlucky to have a header cleared off the line. Thurrock then broke away at the other end and Carvell hit a shot from the edge of the area into the top of the net. A long range shot from Heard threatened the Thurrock goal but Madden was on hand to save again. Two more opportunities for the visitors substitute, Robert Clark , saw firstly his dipping shot go just over the bar and then a weaving run end with a shot also going over.

It was an encouraging performance from the hosts coming from a heavy defeat on Tuesday evening.
