Merstham 3 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 6th December 2014
Whitstable Town were eventually beaten at Merstham who were probably flattered by the 3-0 score line.
The first half was very even with the first opportunity coming for the visitors as Jack Healey crossed to find Conner Coyne who tapped the ball just wide. Eight minutes later, Merstham had their first chance as Tommy Hutchings sent a free kick went wide of the target. On 20 minutes, Peter Adeniyi curled a shot wide for Merstham . With 28 minutes gone, Fabio Saraiva sent a cross past an empty net but there was nobody to put the ball away. Town were not short of chances eithe as firstly Scott Heard cut in after 31 minutes and shot but his attempt was palmed away by home keeper Brannon Daly and then Ian Pulman weaved into the penalty area and his attempt went just wide.
The second half started at a frenetic pace as Whitstable could have gone ahead after 46 minutes as Joe Kennett shot against the top of the cross bar. Within a
minute Merstham took the lead as Aaron Rhule was found by Omar Folkes. There was a hint of offside but Rhule fired home. Town did not lie down and die and created a number of opportunities. On 49 minutes Tom Loynes sent in a cross which reached Kennett who for the second time hit the woodwork but this time the shot ricocheted off the upright. On 51 minutes Pulman had a shot deflected wide and within a minute Loynes fired just wide. Loynes again attacked on 58 minutes but this time shot just over the bar from the right. However Merstham were still dangerous as Luke Watkins had to be at his best to save when Hutchings hit a shot after 61 minutes. Then came a bizarre incident that saw one of the Merstham substitutes see red as he was warming up. He inexplicably appeared to strike out as he passed the Whitstable bench and was immediately sent to the
changing room. However this did not impact on Merstham as they then sealed the game as firstly on 77 minutes, Saraiva slotted the ball home and then on 81 minutes Hutchings fired home a long range shot. With five minutes to go Whitstable were unlucky not to narrow the deficit as Pulman hit a free kick which was deflected onto the bar.
It was a case of Merstham taking the chances and that was the difference between the teams.
