LATE WEBB GOAL SEALS DESERVED DRAW

Thamesmead Town 2 Whitstable Town 2

Pre Season Friendly

Thursday 25th July 2013

Whitstable came away with a share of the spoils on Thursday evening in a two all draw away against Ryman Premier new boys Thamesmead Town.

The early pressure came from the hosts with Lewis Tozer having the first opportunity after five minutes but his header was tame and did not cause any problem for Town keeper Luke Watkins. Their second chance came after nine minutes when striker Chris Edwards sent a shot just over the bar. Town then came into the game with Mo Takaloo shooting wide from long range after twelve minutes. Two minutes later Scott Heard sent a shot straight at Thamesmead keeper Rob Budd. The chances were now coming thick and fast at both ends. After 19 minutes Jordan Wells shot wide. Hosts midfielder Richard Stevens then drove a shot past the post.  Then on 24 minutes Takaloo had a free kick from 20 yards out which Budd managed to push the ball over the bar. From the resultant corner Heard put over a cross which was converted by Dan Ellett to give Town the lead. Heard caused problems four minutes later when another corner put Budd under pressure but the ball was cleared away.  Thamesmead could have had an equaliser after 34 minutes but the ball was looped over the bar by Baff Addae with Watkins in “no man’s land”. Two minutes later a shot by Stevens hit the top of the bar. Then came the equaliser after 41 minutes as Edwards curled the ball in the corner of the net giving Watkins no chance.  Then a minute before half time Stevens broke free and planted the ball in the net to give the hosts a half time lead. There was one more chance in the half as Takaloo curled a shot just wide.

The second half started a little quieter with the first chance not coming until the 55th minute when Theo Fairweather-Johnson sent a shot just wide. Stuart Zanone then tested Watkins after 61 minutes but the Town keeper did well to block the shot.  Heard then  created a chance moving forward and striking a shot the hit the inside of the post and unluckily the ball went away to safety. Ten minutes later and Town were again on the attack and Anthony Bagley had a shot but Budd saved well. With time running out Thamesmead were again threatening as Fairweather-Johnson shot wide under pressure. With only two minutes to go Town got the equaliser their performance deserved. Ross Webb was put through by Mattieu Guilla. Webb then slotted the ball into the net to put a cap on an encouraging performance.

The small crowd went home entertained in a game that could have ended ten all.
