Corinthian-Casuals 5 Whitstable Town 1

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 23rd February 2013

Following Tuesday night’s performance away at Sittingbourne, it was such a surprise to see Whitstable perform so poorly on Saturday afternoon as they were hammered 5-1 by fellow strugglers  Corinthian-Casuals. It had however started so well for the Town as after two minutes James Morrish created the first opportunity but was unable to find the target. Two minutes later Casuals had their first chance when Craig Mullen hit a shot that was blocked. The rebound found James Cottee but his shot was cleared away by Laurence Harvey.

Town then took the lead after eight minutes. Tom Brunt put in a searching cross and Casuals defender Maddie Nubaga deflected the ball into his own net.  But the lead only lasted one minute as Casuals had three shots blocked in a melee only for the ball to run to Jamie Byatt who hammered the ball home.  The game settled down and after 19 minutes debutant James Everitt hit a shot wide whilst under pressure. After 34 minutes Byatt was in the action again as he broke free but lobbed the ball over the bar. Two minutes later Town had another opportunity when Scott Heard sent in a cross to find Buster Smissen whose header went wide. Casuals then started to take control when Cottee hit a shot that was well saved by Nick Shaw. Then came two killer blows just before half time. Firstly after 39 minutes a free kick was sent into the Town penalty area and Craig Mullen lobbed a header over Shaw to give Casuals the lead. Four minutes later Joe Hicks sent in a shot into the corner of the net to give Corinthian-Casuals a deserved 3-1 lead at half-time.

Town did start with more purpose in the second half but were failing to create any meaningful chances. However Mullen got the first opportunity of the half after 53 minutes but sent his shot just wide. After 64 minutes Byatt had another chance but curled the ball wide. At the other end after 75 minutes Heard fed Morrish who unleashed a shot that went just wide of the target.

Then came the incident that finished the game. With Casuals on the attack Morrish was adjudged to bring down a Casuals player in the penalty area. Up stepped Byatt to score his second. Town did have a couple of chances to narrow the gap. Firstly David Raggett had a header that was looping above Danny Bracken in the Casuals goal. Bracken managed to get his hand to the ball and push it over the bar. Then with one minute remaining Danny Williams hit a shot wide. In injury time Casuals rubbed salt in the wound when Mullen fired home.

This was a poor performance and Town need to re-group prior to the game away at Maidstone on Tuesday night.
