Following Thursday night’s under18’s three nil defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge, Justin reflects on progress……..

A Positive Evening

Last night the U18’s took on the U18 side from League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge. In the driving rain, our lads put on an exceptional display considering they have only been together a few months and are a brand new side. I have to take my hat off to them for their work rate and the way they stood up to a very good side. The never gave in and on a different day the result could have been different. They had plenty of chances and played some decent football at times.

Someone recently asked me at the Meet the Manager about whether we had made too much change too quickly. I tend to agree with him, that in an ideal world we wouldn’t have made quite so many changes, but the opportunities were there and in the long term I believe they will pay dividends. There is alot of hard work going on behind the scenes on the football side constantly within the Management Teams. Wayne and Tony have been working really hard to form a side just capable of competing at the moment. They are both winners and results have been hard on both them and the players. However, from last nights performance there is alot of positives to take. However, the boys must perform like that every week to ensure they are competing in the games, and they understand that. I know its been hard for Wayne and Tony, but I believe they realise that this is a long term thing. We need to get our structure working right and get players to the club and over time we want to make Whitstable the place to be. There were a few there last night and that support goes a long way with these guys and I was so pleased for them last night as I know how much work they put in.

All of the Management Team were there last night from all the levels and we had a very good evening and there seemed to be a real buzz around us all. Ian Grieves is doing an exceptional job in helping to build a structure so the club can move forward every year. He is helping with the U18’s now and that can only help Wayne and Tony. Ian has also helped Bob and Lee and is crucial in the role of pulling it all together. Neil’s Under 15’s are really starting to look good and an appointment of a new coach shows the professionalism that we are trying to bring to all levels at the club.

The reserves are absolutely flying and we don’t need to tell Bob what a good job he is doing. I think they need to tighten up at the back a bit though as I think they have conceded about 4 now in the League and are struggling in front of goal, only netting 35 times in 7 games. But I hope things will improve there.

1st Team wise, we are ok. Dave is doing a great job on the intelligence side of things on the opposition, and its making a huge difference to our results. It shows how important all these roles are to get the success we crave. We have an important game tomorrow and we need to be at our best to get anything from Sittingbourne as they are a decent outfit this season. But things are looking good at the club and we cant do any of it without the support of you guys coming through the turnstiles. A massive thank you to you as always and we look forward to the next phase of the season leading up to Christmas.

Congratulations to Wayne, Tony and the boys again for last night and I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Thanks as always
