Whitstable Town 0 Hythe Town 1
Robert Dyas Cup 2nd Round
Saturday 28th September 2013
Whitstable Town were dumped out of the Robert Dyas Cup 2nd Round on Saturday by Hythe Town thanks to a goal from Dave Cook.
Town who had only two players in starting line up from the team against Faversham in midweek. Jordan Wells had the first opportunity of the game after six minutes but the attempt was easily saved by Dan Eason in the Hythe goal. Hythe then had their first attack on ten minutes when firstly Shaun Welford had a shot from the right that was well saved by Luke Watkins who also got in the way of Cook’s attempt from the rebound. A minute later Hythe should have been ahead but Craig Cloke sent his shot straight at Watkins when it seemed easier to score. Welford had another attempt after 13 minutes but he also shot straight at the busy Whitstable keeper. However Hythe eventually took the lead on 17 minutes when a
ball came in from the left and eventually found the visitors captain Cook who sent his shot into the back of the net. Town did continue to threaten but lacked a sharpness in front of goal. After 23 minutes Billy Cobb, making his first start for the hosts, sent in a cross come shot that looped over the bar and then seven minutes later Whitstable had their best opportunity of the half when Joe Lester cutting in from the right hit the post with his attempt. The ball rebounded to Jordan Wells who should have done better but couldn’t quite get the angle to threaten the goal. Wells had another chance a minute before half time but sent his shot straight at Eason.
The second half started in a similar shape to the first with the first opportunity coming to Laurence Harvey, after 46 minutes, who headed over the bar from a corner. A minute later at the other end Welford shot across the goalmouth but there was no one on hand to put the ball in the back of the net . Three minutes later Lester turned into the penalty area but his shot was easily saved by Eason. The hosts had another chance on 57 minutes when Wells also sent a shot again straight at the Hythe keeper. A number of the crowd
thought Hythe had increased their lead after 66 minutes when after a melee in the Whitstable penalty area but the ball had looped over the cross bar for a goal kick. A minute later Hythe’s Ronnie Dolan had a shot that was deflected wide. The game then settled into a midfield battle with few more chances although Dolan did break free on the stroke of full time but Watkins was on hand to block.
The game ended with Hythe booking their place in the second round for a game against Maidstone United or Herne Bay.
