Whitstable Town 3 Tooting & Mitcham United 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 19th September 2015
Whitstable Town worked hard to seal their first league win on the season as they beat Tooting & Mitcham United 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The game could not have started better for Town as after 60 seconds Kieron Campbell broke in from the left and sent in a ball with the outside of his right boot to Alfie Nunn who hammered home from the near post to give the hosts the lead. A couple of opportunities followed for Tooting’s Brendan Murphy-McVey but both of them was easily collected by Town keeper Adam Highsted. Whitstable then proceeded to have the best of the rest of the first half as firstly on sixteen minutes Scott Heard hit a shot straight at Tooting keeper Samuel Somerville. Nunn continued to work hard as he shot
from the left but Somerville saved well. Somerville was on hand again a minute later when he blocked a shot from Josh Algar and then a long range shot from Heard went wide. With six minutes to go until half time when Tooting were reduced to ten men when Serge Makofo was shown a straight red card as he brought Heard down as he broke in on goal. The resultant free kick from Calum McGeehan deflected off the top of the cross bar and behind. A couple of opportunities for Tooting towards the end of the half saw Jamie Byatt turn and shot but he was denied by man of the match Highsted and then into injury time Kurtis Pykes had a shot blocked well by the Town keeper.
The second half started with a rejuvenated Tooting and they were put the Town goal under pressure. Firstly a minute into the half Byatt had a shot well blocked. Town were now working on the break and Sam Bewick turned and shot over the bar. Another chance saw Ashley Robinson slam an attempt into the side netting and then Town defender Luke Doherty had to be at his best to deny Byatt. Town’s defence stayed resolute and Byatt was to shoot wide on 69 minutes. Tooting were being frustrated in their attempts to draw level and it was Town who were now looking dangerous on the break. With six minutes to go Heard fed Campbell but his attempt was blocked by Somerville. Within a minute another Campbell effort was saved by the
Tooting keeper. However Heard was to seal the points as he pounced on the ball and found himself in front of an empty net and he walked the ball in. Heard was not finished and put the icing on the cake with a similar goal when he again shot into an empty net.
The afternoon came as a great relief for Whitstable who must be grateful to an excellent second half performance from the back four plus the goalkeeper to ensure a clean sheet and three welcome points.
