Whitstable put in a good performance at Oakwood and ran out comfortable winners against an Erith Town side who created a few good opportunities particularly in the second half, but always looked vulnerable at the back. Ashley Brown opened the scoring from a corner after 21 minutes and two Kane Rowland goals both following defensive mix ups effectively sealed the points before half time. The home side did pull a goal back after 72 minutes as substitute Marcus Adu-Nyanko headed home a free kick, but a Harry Brown free kick and a well taken goal from Darren Marsden completed the biggest win of the season for the Oystermen.

Erith Town whose first team ground share at VCD this season have not made a great start to the campaign, but have won three league games including a good 1-0 victory at Cray Valley (PM).

Ashley Brown returned to the Whitstable starting line-up, but otherwise there were no changes from the previous match. Erith won an early corner and also had a decent chance as Liam Donaldson headed a cross from James Coppins straight at Dan Eason. After 7 minutes Dane Luchford found Rowland who appeared to be brought down in the box, but the referee waved away the confident appeals for a penalty. Rowland then laid the ball back to the hard working Craig Thompson, but his shot was wide and Luchford had a header saved from a Charlie Smith free kick. At the other end the referee deemed a Harry Brown challenge on the lively Bradley Simms worthy of a yellow card. On 19 minutes two players went for the ball in the centre circle and it ballooned back to Eason, who picked it up and was penalised for handling a back pass. During the protests the referee appeared to show a yellow card to Ashley Brown, but when the free kick was eventually taken it was rolled back to the edge of the box where a complete miskick ended the danger. Whitstable made the breakthrough as a deep Luchford corner was headed back across the goal by Rowland and nodded in by Ashley Brown. Luchford then latched on to a poor clearance and nudged the ball past goalkeeper Bobby Sturgeon, but failed to get enough on it and it was cleared for a corner and he then met a Harry Brown throw but shot just wide. Thompson was booked as he caught the stooping Nico James with an attempted overhead kick.

On 38 minutes a mistake in the Erith defence as they tried to play the ball forward saw it rebound to Rowland who calmly flicked it past Sturgeon with the outside of his foot to double the lead. After Smith almost got on the end of a Harry Brown corner, another defensive mix up on the 18 yard line gifted the ball to Rowland who took it on and fired past the helpless keeper again to make it 3-0 at the break.

Erith made two substitutions for the second half and did get into some promising positions at times, but rarely looked likely to get back into the match. Their best chances came from set pieces delivered by the left foot of James Hawkins, but Whitstable continued to dominate with Marsden at the heart of things and Lee, Smith and when he came on Nick Treadwell winning the battle in midfield. Smith went down in the box shortly after the restart and Connor Hood was booked, presumably for something he said. Rob Gillman then headed a Harry Brown free kick over the bar. On 58 minutes good play by Marsden released Rowland who was denied a hat trick by Sturgeon. Michael McKenna had a goal bound effort headed out by Ashley Brown and then a spell of passing by Whitstable ended with Marsden playing in Harry Brown whose chip was just too high.

Then came the Erith consolation goal as a Hawkins free kick was headed in at the far post by Adu-Nyanko with the visitors defence slow to react. Hawkins was booked for pulling back Lee after he had played a 1-2 with Marsden. Harry Brown took the free kick and it found its way through the wall and into the bottom corner to make it 4-1 on 80 minutes. Just afterwards another Hawkins free kick reached Luqman Adesina who shot against the Whitstable crossbar. On 84 minutes Harris Rodgers and Rowland both did well to retain possession and find Marsden who ran through and slotted the ball past Sturgeon to cap a fine performance. Hawkins caught Treadwell with a late tackle and was probably fortunate to avoid a second yellow card in a game that had already seen seven without being particularly dirty. Whitstable had one more attempt cleared from under the bar before the final whistle.

It was a good team performance by Whitstable and everyone played their part. The front two deserve a mention with another two goals for Rowland – now on 12 in 13 games – and Thompson, who did not score but had probably his best game of the season in a battling display.
