Herne Bay 1 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Tuesday 4th March 2014
Herne Bay came out on top in a hard fought derby match at a heavy but playable Winchs Field on Tuesday evening.
The Bay started the better of the two teams with a George Benner header over the bar in the first minute. Town’s first attack came in the 13th minute when a Steve Hafner corner found Laurence Harvey and his header went just over the bar. Two minutes later Hafner crossed from the left but David Raggett could not quite get on the end of it. Within a minute Herne Bay were on the attack with a Jordan Casey shot which caused problems but went just wide. Herne Bay continued to look more dangerous and hit the woodwork
after 18 minutes when Benner hooked the ball onto the post and away. Within seconds Stuart King got in the action but had his attempt tipped over the bar by Town keeper Luke Watkins. The Bay’s pressure finally paid off when a minute later a long throw from Connor Sanders found Jordan Casey who headed on at the near post to beat Watkins and give the hosts the lead. Town did have and opportunity after 31 minutes when another cross from Hafner found Charlie Smith in the penalty area but despite having two bites of the cherry he was crowded out by the Bay defence. Then a minute before half time Dean Grant had a shot deflected wide by Watkins for a corner.
Very few clear cut goal scoring opportunities were created during the second half as both defences stood firm. On 61 minutes Benner moved in at the far post but his attempt went well wide. Town did press for an equaliser but could not break down a strong Bay defence and it was not until the last ten minutes that
they had some clear attempts on goal. Firstly with ten minutes to go Joe Lester shot wide of the target from 25 yards and then with a minute of normal time left the same player sneaked in at the far post but sent his attempt wide.
Herne Bay held on to take all three points and left Town to look over their shoulders as a number of results went against them at the bottom of the table.
