Sittingbourne 1 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 24th August 2013
Whitstable could not build on recent good performances and went down one nil on a miserable afternoon at Sittingbourne’s new ground at Woodstock Park. The torrential rain lasted all afternoon making the top surface very wet and slippy.
Both sides took time to adjust to the conditions and it was the hosts who had the first opportunity when after 12 minutes a shot by Ryan Golding was cleared away. From the resultant corner Ollie Gray sent in a header which Luke Watkins in the Town goal covered well. Whitstable then immediately went up the other end. Steve Hafner had a shot tipped over the bar by Adam Molloy. From the corner James Morrish had a header cleared off the line. The game then quietened down and it was not until 24th minute that Sittingbourne had
another chance. Tom Loynes had a shot which Watkins was able to push round the post. Two minutes later Hafner sent in a cross into the Sittingbourne penalty area but Peter Huggens could not quite get a touch on the ball to redirect it goalward. Sittingbourne eventually took the lead on 38 minutes when Golding got on the end of a corner and was able to head the ball past Watkins. Scott Heard who wasn’t as threatening as he has been in recent games had a shot five minutes before half time but it went well wide. Three minutes later Loynes had a long range shot which tested Watkins but the keeper was able to push the ball wide. Half time came with Sittingbourne having the one goal lead.
The second half carried on in the same manner with neither side really threatening to score. Four minutes into the half Loynes shot wide and a minute later Morrish at other end could not find the target. In the gloomy wet conditions it was becoming more difficult to identify players but Sittingbourne did have a header that went wide of the target after 57 minutes. On the hour Ross
Webb had a shot from the right but Sittingbourne keeper Molloy saved easily. Ten minutes later Heard again got a shot away but could not get control on the ball and it went high over the bar. There were few other chances that threatened either keeper on what was a poor game of football.
This was a bad day at the office for the Town and they must now regroup before the game on Monday against Herne Bay.
