Whitstable Town 2 Folkestone Invicta 2

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Tuesday 14th October 2014

Whitstable Town and Folkestone Invicta produced an entertaining game in a 2-2 draw at the Belmont on Tuesday evening.

Folkestone started the brighter and took the lead after eleven minutes when Paul Booth managed to get in first to slot the ball past Luke Watkins. Two minutes later Town had their first opportunity when Kane Rowland on the turn shot over the bar. However the visitors

continued to press  and on sixteen minutes Watkins was at his best to make a one handed save from Ian Draycott. The pressure was piling on the Town defence as Nat Blanks sent in a shot from the left that hit the bar. On nineteen minutes Rowland found some space but fired wide. On the half an hour a curling shot from Booth went just over the hosts bar. However on 33 minutes Town got back into the game when Ian Pulman found Tom Loynes  who sprang the offside trap running into the penalty area and slotting the ball past Folkestone keeper Tim Roberts to bring the scores level. On 44 minutes Tom Loynes fed Scott Heard but his attempt was blocked by Roberts. There was commotion at half time as  Neil Cugley, Folkestone manager was sent to the stands for something he said to the assistant referee as they went in for half time.

The second half started with Folkestone on the attack and three minutes in Frankie Chappell headed over the bar. However it was Whitstable who took the lead on 51 minutes when Heard sent in a  deep cross that found Rowland who calmly slotted home. The game was now going end to end as the next chance came on 57 minutes  when Darren Smith headed towards the goal but the ball was turned round the post by Watkins. On the hour Folkestone equalised when the ball was slotted across the penalty area for Booth to get his second as he tapped the ball over the line. Both sides now went in search of the winner. On 68 minutes Peter Wedgeworth crossed to find Heard who, off balance, shot over the bar. On 75 minutes Booth shot over the bar for Folkestone.  With time ticking away Whitstable keeper Watkins made two fine saves as firstly he tipped a shot from Jordan Wright over the bar and then a free kick from Smith looked to be going goalward until Watkins pushed the ball around the post. However with the last kick of the game Tim Roberts was on hand to save Folkestone as he pushed a shot from Rowland, who got on the end of a Loynes cross, away for a corner.

It would have been cruel for either side not to take anything out of an entertaining encounter.
