Whitstable Town 1 Horsham 1

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Tuesday 29th October 2013

A late Ashley Baverstock goal gained Whitstable a point in their league fixture at home to Horsham on Tuesday evening.

The early exchanges did not provide many chances until the 20th minute when a mazy run from Ross Morley gave the visitors an opportunity but the ball was cleared away before he could produce a goal threatening attempt. Then on 23 minutes  a speculative shot from Billy Dunn went straight into the arms of Town keeper Luke Watkins. Whitstable had their first opportunity after 24 minutes but Scott Heard sent a shot wide of the target.  Horsham continued to threaten and on 29 minutes Gabriel Odunaike forced his way through

the Town defence but his cross come shot went across the penalty area with nobody able to convert the chance.  At the other end Steve Hafner put in a cross that found James Morrish but he couldn’t get his header away. Then on 39 minutes Odunaike sent another cross right across the Town penalty area but yet again there was no one on hand to find the net.  The half closed with the scores level and a limited number of clear chances.

The second half started in a similar way but Horsham were gifted a penalty after 50 minutes when a John Guest mistimed challenge led to the referee pointing to the spot. Dunn stepped up and fired a straight penalty into the back of the net  and gave Horsham a lead.  Two minutes later Peter Huggens had a long range shot that went wide of the target and then three minutes later Guest got on the end of a cross but his header went straight at Horsham keeper Michael Hunter.  Town continued to create some chances as Craig Thompson broke free but sent his shot wide. Horsham were still looking capable of increasing their lead and on 70 minutes Jamie Cade sent a shot which was easily gathered by Watkins. With 15 minutes to go Thompson

got in a cross that Heard tapped just wide of the target. Then with seven minutes left on the clock Town finally got their equaliser as a corner flashed in. The ball eventually found Baverstock at the far post and he headed in from close range. Town did have one more chance in injury to steal all three points but Joe Kane hammered a shot just over the bar after a melee in the Horsham penalty area.

Both sides had to settle for a point as the final whistle blew with a draw probably being the fair result.
