Whitstable Town 3 Walton & Hersham 2
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 15th March 2014
Whitstable came away with three important points at the Belmont on Saturday.
The first half started with Whitstable creating the better opportunities. Scott Heard had the first chance after two minutes when he shot wide from the edge of the area. Town’s pressure turned into a goal after nine minutes when Steve Hafner put in a ball to the near post where Jake Mackenzie stroked the ball into the net. Walton & Hersham had their first opportunity after eleven minutes when Peter Wedgeworth shot wide of the target. On 20 minutes Hafner had a free kick from the edge of the area which went well
over the bar. Town increased their lead on 35 minutes when Matt Martin broke down the left and fired the ball past Dan Coles who despite getting a hand to the ball could not stop it going into the net. With 37 minutes gone Walton & Hersham striker Matt Reece tried to looped the ball over Luke Watkins from distance but the ball dropped over the bar. Then came a couple of chances in succession in 38 minutes. Jack Parter first of all had a shot that was blocked and then Heard on the rebound hit a bullet shot that was tipped over by Coles. Walton & Hersham then ended the half on the attack as a minute before the break a melee in the Town area saw the ball cleared off the line twice. And then on the stoke of the interval the visitors got back in the game when Wedgeworth headed into the net .
Town continued on the attack in the second half when Parter shot well wide from the edge of the area. On 52 minutes Heard found himself one on one with Coles but the keeper managed to get his body behind the ball. Walton & Hersham then came into the game with the ever dangerous Reece forcing a save
from Watkins after 56 minutes. Then on 65 minutes Andrew Mansah had a shot deflected wide. Two minutes later Reece again was in the action when he turned and shot but Watkins was at his best to save. Town increased the lead after 71 minutes when Martin found himself free and toe poked the ball past Coles for Town’s third. Walton did not lay down and die and Mansah was on hand to fire home after 76 minutes . On 84 minutes Parter fed Martin on the near post but he could not quite turn quick enough to put the ball on target.
That was the end of the scoring as Town held on to hold on to a deserved victory by 3-2.
