Whitstable Town 4 Carshalton Athletic 1
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Tuesday 23rd September 2014
Whitstable Town put up a great performance to hammer Carshalton Athletic 4-1 at the Belmont on Tuesday evening.
The game started with Town on the attack and in the ninth minute Tom Loynes shot. Carshalton keeper Matt
Willard fumbled but the ball was cleared but it came back to Loynes who again hit the ball but it was blocked. However Loynes was not to be denied as he carved through the Carshalton defence on 14 minutes and slotted the ball past Willard to give Town a deserved lead. Carshalton had their first attack after 17 minutes when Michael Campbell shot over the bar. Town’s lead only lasted 14 minutes before a deep cross found Brendan Murphy-McVey on the far post. He volleyed a bullet shot that gave Luke Watkins in the Town goal no chance. However this did not stop Town as on 34 minutes Scott Heard broke through
the Carshalton defence but his shot was well blocked by Willard. Ian Pulman took the resultant corner which found Nick Treadwell who headed wide. Right on half time the referee awarded a free kick from twenty yards. Up stepped Pulman whose shot curled a little on its way into the back of the Carshalton net to give Town a half time lead.
The second half was only two minutes old when Pulman as good as killed the game when he took a half chance and sent the ball dipping over Willard to increase Whitstable’s lead. Town continued on the attack as they looked to increase their lead. Peter Wedgeworth cut in and sent a shot over the bar after 51 minutes and then on 58 minutes Matty Guila got on the end of a Loynes cross but headed over the bar. The Town midfielder was to get his reward four minutes later when Wedgeworth pulled the ball back and Guila tapped the ball into the net to get Whitstable’s fourth. Loynes was again the action on 67 minutes when he cut in but shot over. On 78 minutes Pulman nearly got his hat trick when he got through but his shot was saved by Willard. Carshalton did have a couple of chances to narrow the lead as on 81 minutes Campbell’s shot sailed over the bar. Town held on for an excellent victory which takes them up to fifth place in the table.
Town must now go on their travels with confidence of a fine performance to give them two homes wins in two.
