Whitstable Town achieved their first clean sheet of the season as they drew 0-0 at East Grinstead on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a tight affair with the hosts having the first attempt after two minutes when Ben Chick cut in and fired over the bar. Whitstable had to wait until the 16th minute when Ian Pulman found himself on his own and shot from the right again over the bar. Within a minute a Peter Wedgeworth cross caused problems in the home defence but Kane Rowland couldn’t quite get on the end of it. On 29 minutes, ex Whitstable midfielder, JP Collier shot straight at Town keeper Luke Watkins. With four minutes until the break Rowland

fired wide and then at the other end a minute later Kieron Pamment cut in and again did not test Watkins. On the stroke of half time Watkins saved easily from Matt Geard.

The second half started with a similar pattern with the first chance coming again on  52 minutes to East Grinstead as Guy Harding, unmarked at the far post, headed wide of the target. At the other end, Pulman turned and hooked the ball created but it was collected well by Mark Fox in the Wasps goal. The hosts had two chances in quick succession as firstly Harding headed over the bar from a corner on 64 minutes and then two minutes later Steve Sargent sent a free kick high over the bar. With 68 minutes to go a great long ball from Rowland found Tom Loynes who controlled the ball well but blasted wide. Then came the most controversial moment of the half when

Rowland put the ball into the East Grinstead net but it was ruled out for off side.  On 74 minutes Loynes crossed into the area to Rowland who found Pulman but the Town striker hooked the ball just over the bar. Both sides continued to look for the winner but the game eventually ended scoreless.

Joint Whitstable manager Jim  Ward said after the game ” It wasn’t the best game but the clean sheet was welcome. ”
