Whitstable Town 1 Herne Bay 0
Kent Senior Cup 2nd Round
Tuesday 1st October 2013
Whitstable progressed into the next round of the Kent Senior Cup despite being reduced to eight men in a bad tempered game against local rivals Herne Bay.
Town were first on the attack when Steve Hafner had a free kick just outside the penalty area after three minutes. His shot sailed over the cross bar. Six minutes later Bay had their first attempt but Dean Grant’s long range shot also went over the bar. On a quarter of an hour Joe Kane was unlucky to turn the ball back onto the post from a Scott Heard corner. In the end to end start to the game Bay’s Danny Walder sent a free kick curling around the post after 19 minutes. Town were again to hit the woodwork after 20 minutes when a John
Guest header from a free kick hit the post and went away. Town were now pressing and after 29 minutes Heard shot over the bar. Town’s new signing Craig Thompson who had a promising first game came into the action and hammered a shot just wide of the target after 36 minutes. Heard had another attempt a minute before the break but he sent his shot from the edge of the area just over the bar. Just on the stroke of half time Bay had their best opportunity but following a melee in the Town penalty area Luke Watkins pulled off a great save to deny the visitors.
Town increased the pressure after the break and took a deserved lead after 50 minutes when Thompson broke free and slotted the ball past Jack Delo. On 56 minutes Ben Brown had a free kick on the edge of the area but his attempt went over the bar. Two minutes later Jack Simon shot wide of the target. On seventy minutes Town substitute Charlie Smith had a shot from the edge of the penalty area but was denied by an excellent save by Delo. With ten minutes to go Heard fired over the bar. Then came a free kick for Bay five minutes before time on the edge of the area but Jordan Casey sent his shot over the bar. The “red mist” then descended on the ground as tempers flared in the last five minutes following the award of a free kick just outside the Whitstable penalty area. Firstly a red card was shown to James Morrish and then Guest received a second yellow card and followed Morrish to the changing room. A moment of further madness
when just after that incident Hafner was also shown a red card for violent conduct to reduce Town to eight men but it was too late for Bay to take advantage and they held on to move into the next round of the Kent Senior Cup.
This is going to be an expensive evening for Town and three players will now face suspensions for varying lengths. They await who will be their opponents in the quarter finals.
Team: Watkins, Kane, Maguire, Hafner, Harvey, Guest, Heard, Morrish, Thompson (Smith C 64 mins), Simon (Baverstock 60 mins), Hooper (Huggens 77 mins).
