Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Tuesday 9th September 2014

Whitstable Town sunk to 3-2 defeat at high flying Chipstead on Tuesday evening despite playing against nine men for 40 minutes.

The first half started fairly evenly with Chipstead having their first opportunity in the very first minute when Dan Moody drove a shot straight at Luke Watkins. Two minutes later Ian Puman broke free at the other end but he sent his shot also went straight at Chipstead keeper Aaron Bufton.  However slowly Chipstead started to take control and were ahead on 20 minutes when Moody was left on his own to slam the ball past Watkins. It only took four minutes for Chipstead to increase their lead as Moody

got his second as he moved in from the right and slotted home. The misery continued for the Town on 26 minutes when Dan Llancer hooked a shot into the back of the Town net.  Three goals in six minutes and there could have been more before half time. On 32 minutes Will Turl blasted over as he met a cross on the far post.  Within three minutes it could have been more. Firstly on 38 minutes Kofi Quartey shot wide  then a minute later Moody sent in a curling shot that just missed the target and then Llancer had a shot well saved by Watkins. Two minutes later Chipstead were down to ten men when Ben Dyett was sent off for a second yellow card. This signalled an opportunity for Town to grab hold of a life line and Luke Doherty was able to flick on a header from a Peter Wedgeworth cross to give Town their first goal.

Town started the second half will a little more purpose and on 51 minutes the drama started as firstly the referee spotted an infringement in the Chipstead penalty area. Ryan Golding stepped up and sent Bufton the wrong way. As Golding collected the ball from the net he was barged over by Bufton who saw red for a second bookable offence and Chipstead were down to nine men.  At this stage the hosts “parked the bus” and defended stoutly limiting Town to few chances. On 59 minutes Joe Kennett sent a shot just  over the bar. Then on 69 minutes Pulman sent a shot swinging wide. Nick Treadwell did find the net when he headed in on 83 minutes but the attempt was ruled out for a push. With seven minutes of additional time added Town did have an opportunity when Tom Loynes shot over but it was Chipstead who nearly rubbed salt into the wounds when substitute Bobbie Webb sent a looping shot just over the Town bar.

It had been a disappointing evening for Town who must now regroup before the important cup tie at Hythe Town on Saturday.
