TOWN’S FIGHT BACK NOT QUITE ENOUGH

Damian Abel fires home penalty

Tooting & Mitcham United 3 Whitstable Town 2

Ryman League Division One South

Saturday 24th November 2012

It was that game of two halves. As we drew breathe at half time there was real concern that Town would be on the end of a drubbing as they found themselves deservedly three down but a much improved performance in the second half could have brought about a point but Town could not find that elusive equaliser.

Stuart Vahid gets second

Town started the game without the injured James Morrish, Jake Beecroft and Jimmy Dryden but included on loan signing Sean Raggett who signed from Dover Athletic and soon found themselves one down after only three minutes. Rob French went to collect a high ball but under pressure spilt it and Carl Wilson-Denis was on hand to fire home Tooting’s first goal. The hosts could have been two up after 16 minutes when Taurean Roberts hit a shot that deflected off Micheal Everitt and went over the bar.  Then two long range efforts from Damian Abel did not find the target. Firstly after 19 minutes he sliced a shot well wide and then four minutes later he had a better effort which went just wide.  However Tooting were still having the best of the game and after 24 minutes they went two up when Trevor Rowe hooked the ball past French. Things went from bad to worse when eight minutes later Roberts swung his foot at the ball and sent the ball into the back of the net to put Tooting in total command.

Jake MacKenzie hits a shot but goes wide

Town however did try to hit back when a Nicky Southall won the ball and put over a cross that found new signing Raggett who shot wide.  After 36 minutes Abel sent in another long range shot which went to the right of the post and away for a goal kick. Tooting could have been four up after 40 minutes when Roberts weaved his way around the Town defence and then unleashed a shot that missed the target due to a deflection.   The half time whistle gave Town a chance to re-group.

Whatever Southall and Richard Langley said at half time seemed to reignite Town. Yet another long range effort from Abel went over the bar after 51 minutes and then five minutes later Whitstable were awarded a penalty when Rob Gilman was taken down in the penalty area.  Abel put his penalty to the Tooting goalkeeper Darren Behcet ’s  left and despite getting a hand to it the ball slid in the corner.

Only a minute later got onto a loose ball following a defensive mix-up and Stuart Vahid managed to send the ball in to the back of the net.  Then only a minute later Town could have been on level terms when Jake Mackenzie curled a shot wide.  A scramble in the Tooting penalty area after 75 minutes was cleared away and then after 80 minutes Everitt sent a shot that was goal bound but it was deflected for a corner.

Unfortunately Town could not find the equaliser and Tooting held on to take the three points.
