Whitstable came from two goals behind to earn a draw in a feisty local derby at home to Herne Bay on Monday afternoon.

Town were the first out of the blocks and it was Charlie Smith who side footed the ball past the post and then on fourteen minutes Kieron Campbell cut in from the left but shot straight into Herne Bay keeper, Jack Delo’s arms. Controversy surrounded Bay’s opening goal on 21 minutes. The ball was kicked out due to an injury to a Herne Bay player. Instead of throwing the ball back to a Whitstable player it was fed to Danny Williams who raced through to put the ball past Town keeper Adam Highsted. Within three minutes Danny Williams brought the best out of Highsted as he tipped the ball over the bar. Herne Bay were now taking the iniative as Sam Hasler had two opportunities.  He firstly headed wide and then on 38 minutes he fired a shot wide. Bay were then to increase their

lead five minutes before the break as Mark Lovell placed the ball past Highsted. Campbell did have one opportunity to get a goal back four minutes from the break as he raced through but fired his shot wide.

Herne Bay continued the second half on the attack as Williams side footed the ball wide at the far post. However Town were beginning to press and Sam Bewick hit the ball over the bar from a free kick. Town were to gain a lifeline on 73 minutes when Bewick sent in a cross that was met superbly by Smith who planted his header passed Delo. A Hasler shot at the other end nearly restored Bay’s two goal lead but his attempt was deflected wide. The pressure was now coming for the hosts as they looked for the equaliser. With ten minutes left Scott Heard shot from outside the area over the bar. Bay were then reduced to ten men as Danny Williams saw his second yellow card. As the game entered injury time the referee noticed hand ball in the Herne Bay penalty area and pointed to the spot with little protest from the visitors. Up stepped Bewick who fired into the corner of Delo’s net to earn Town a hard fought point that took them off the bottom of the table.

It was a fighting performance from Town that will provide confidence for the next couple of games.
