TOWN LEAVE IT FAR TOO LATE

Whitstable Town 1 Walton & Hersham 2

Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Saturday 31st October 2015

Whitstable Town left it far too late to get anything out of Saturday’s game at home to Walton & Hersham as they went down 2-1 to continue their disastrous start to the season.

Town did have the first opportunity as a Connor Heffernan free kick went just wide of the target. Walton & Hersham had their first attempt on six minutes when an Aaron Watson shot went wide. On 17 minutes Marcel Henry-Frances hit a shot for the hosts high over the bar. An excellent header from visitor’s full back John Oyenuga from a cross by Watson went just over the bar. Whitstable captain, Sam Bewick hit a cross come shot from the right that forced Walton’s keeper into a good save as he tipped the ball over the bar. As the half continued it was Walton who took the initiative. Andrew Mensah threatened the Town goal after half an hour but was tackled well by Scott Punton. Within a minute Walton took the lead as a corner from Regan Mendes was met by Mensah who was unchallenged as he headed home. They could have been two up within two minutes as a shot by Ladeem Ajeon was deflected onto the post and away. Cameron Heffernan had to be at his best to block a shot from Mendes seven minutes before half time.

The second half started with Walton on the front foot as they controlled the game. Watson hit a shot wide and then a dipping shot from Dominic Ogun went just over the bar. On 61 minutes Walton got the goal that sealed the victory as a fantastic shot from distance from James Battie sailed into the top corner. Town did threaten to get one back a minute later when Ira Jackson fed the ball to Connor Heffernan whose shot was saved by Howard. Andrew Mensah then had two opportunities for Walton as he firstly had a shot saved by Dan Eason and then he spooned over when under pressure from Punton. Howard was on hand again prevent Town getting a goal back as he saved well from Kieron Campbell. With five minutes of normal time to go Connor Heffernan pounced on a defensive error to calmly loop the ball from distance over Howard and into the net to give Town hope. With two minutes to go a free kick from Josh Algar found Punton whose header was brilliantly saved by Howard to ensure all three points went to Walton.

Things in the table are looking bleak for Town as they remain second from bottom.
