Whitstable Town came away with a deserved 1-0 victory in their Kent Senior Cup tie at Sittingbourne on Tuesday evening.

The early exchanges were fairly even but it was Whitstable who created the first opportunity on sixteen minutes when Sam Bewick curled a free kick but the attempt was deflected wide. Whitstable continued to have the best of the chances as Kieron Edwards was next to put pressure on the Brickies

defence as he had a shot in from the right that went wide. Sittingbourne had to wait until the 25th minute for their first chance when Town keeper Adam Highsted was able to block before Fred Obassa could get the ball under control. Highsted was in the action again as he easily saved from Tom Brunt. On the half hour a very neat one-two between Scott Heard and Michael Hurcombe ended with Heard slotting home to give Whitstable the lead. Visitors’ debutant Javan Scott got in a header from a Heard cross and Sittingbourne keeper Adam Wallace had to be at his best to palm the ball around the post. With two minutes to the break ex Whitstable midfielder Jake Beecroft curled the ball over the bar.

Town continued to have the better of the game as the match went into the second half. On 52 minutes Heard nearly got on the end of a cross but the ball was cleared away. At the other end, Highsted who was dominating his area saved easily from Hicham Akhazzan twice within three minutes. Sittingbourne were looking to get the equaliser but failed to really challenge the Whitstable goal. On 71 minutes Miles Cornwell fired wide and then Nick Davis had a diving header that went over the bar. As the game went into the last ten minutes it was Whitstable who looked more likely to increase their lead. Bewick had two efforts. One went high over the bar and the second went wide. Just before the end substitute Ira Jackson cut in
