Dulwich Hamlet 3 Whitstable Town 0
Ryman Football League Division One (South)
Saturday 23rd March 2013
Whitstable’s had a second half lesson in finishing as they fell to a 3-0 defeat away to title chasers Dulwich Hamlet.
The whole first half was played in the falling wet snow which made conditions very difficult and really Town had the best of the play but failed to turn their possession into goals. After 6 minutes Jake Beecroft hit a shot towards the top right hand corner but Paul Wilson in the Dulwich saved easily. David Raggett broke free for Town two minutes later but could only fire his shot straight at Wilson. Another Beecroft effort after 14 minutes from distance was deflected wide for a corner. Another long range effort after 27 minutes from Scott Heard was again saved easily by Wilson. Dulwich had to wait 35 minutes before their first opportunity of the game and it came from a strike from the left hand side from left back Ryan James. The ball went across the face of the goal and went wide of the
target. Five minutes later Nyren Clunis sent in a dangerous cross for Hamlet but there was no one was on hand to convert the opportunity. Town could be well satisfied with their first half performance as they held on to the Dulwich attack that contained Daniel Carr who was being watched by a number of Premiership scouts.
The weather improved at the start of the second half as the snow stopped but the surface was heavy. Town had the first opportunity of the half when after 50 minutes James Morrish sent in a speculative shot from 30 yards but it went high over the bar. The after 53 minutes James had a shot blocked well by Dean Ruddy. Then after 55 minutes Dulwich got the break through when the ball came to Clunis who found himself free and sent in a lopping shot that found itself into the top right corner giving Ruddy no chance. Laurence Harvey hit a header wide after 57 minutes from a Heard cross but Dulwich continued to go up the gears and in the 58th minute they found themselves two ahead when after a melee in the Town goal area and Carr was able to head in. Dulwich had now
taken control of the game and after 78 minutes they scored their third goal when substitute Xavier Vidal tapped the ball over the line follow a cross into the box. That final goal killed the game. However Dan Hanshaw had a goal disallowed in the last minute of normal time as he fired home following up a shot that was parried by Wilson. However the goal was ruled out controversially for offside. Ruddy did prevent a further goal in injury time following another attempt by Vidal.
At the final whistle Dulwich had shown why they are challenging for the title this season.
