TOWN GO DOWN TO LAST MINUTE PENALTY

Buster Smissen opens the scoring

Whitstable Town 1

Dulwich Hamlet 2

Ryman League Division One (South)

Tuesday 23rd October 2012

Town’s rugged defending seemed to have helped gain a point when a controversial handball decision led to a last minute penalty that allowed Dulwich to take all the points on Tuesday night.

It was a misty evening at the Belmont but the fog held off long enough for the game to go ahead. Town were without Hamshare, Vahid, Southall, and Luchford through injury and Heard who was suspended.

There were limited opportunities in the early part of the game with Town having the first one after five minutes when a Damian Abel shot was gathered at the second attempt by Phil Wilson in the Dulwich goal. After 25 minutes John Guest limped off injured and was replaced by Rob Gilman. Town did take the lead after 34 minutes when Buster Smissen met a Jake MacKenzie cross. He backed headed the ball over keeper Wilson to put Town one up. The lead only lasted three minutes when, after a shot was charged down Frankie Sawyer slotted home.

The half time score of 1-1 was a fair reflection of the first half. Town started the second half on the attack as Smissen sent in a shot which was deflected for a corner.  After 51 minutes Erhun Oztumer  took a shot that sailed high and wide.  The next period of the game was a midfield battle with limited chances. Dulwich were increasing the pressure but the Town defence held out. The home side also had opportunities on the break. After 75 minutes Smissen sent a shot wide with the goal gapping. Dulwich also had chances with Oztumer sending a shot wide after 77 minutes.  A minute later, Rob French, saved well  following  a melee in the penalty area.

Whilst Dulwich were now pressing hard, there were opportunities for Town to snatch a winner but it wasn’t to be.  Then, in the last minute, a Town defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Up stepped Oztumer who sent his penalty into the corner of the net to allow Dulwich to take the points.
