Ryman Football League Division One (South)

Whitstable Town went down to first half injury time goal in their tussle with Walton Casuals on Saturday.

The Town seemed to carry on from where they left off against Ramsgate in midweek as they dominated the first period. Their first chance came after only one minute when Charlie Smith shot over the bar. Four minutes in and another chance for Whitstable as Ross Webb got on to a Scott Heard corner but couldn’t quite get his attempt on target. On eight minutes Jack Simon broke through on the right hand side and shot the ball across the face of goal just wide of putting Town ahead. Walton

Casuals had their first opportunity after nine minutes when Scott Day shot wide from 25 yards. After a quarter of an hour Walton had another chance when Conner French could not quite make the most of an opportunity and the ball went wide. Town were back on the attack after 23 minutes. Heard sent in a free kick that was met by John Guest whose header went over the bar. After 36 minutes Heard had a free kick  that he hit firmly but it went straight  into the arms of Casuals keeper Kieran Sanderson.  Whitstable keeper Luke Watkins continued his excellent form when he saved well from Malachi Hudson. Three minutes from half time the hosts were unlucky when Guest got on the end of a ball into the box but his attempt from two yards out was deflected for a corner.  With Town on top in the first half they suffered a sucker punch when a looping shot from Jamal Jimoh dipped over Watkins into the net to give Walton Casuals the lead at half time.

The chances became more limited after the break. Town had their first chance after 52 minutes when Heard crossed to find Smith whose shot rebounded off the post. Then came Town’s golden opportunity when the referee controversially pointed to the penalty spot for a push on Guest. After a delay as Casuals complained about the decision, up stepped Smith whose penalty kick was fired straight at Sanderson who saved easily.  Then

on 77 minutes Casuals should have taken a two goal lead as Hudson found himself one on one with Watkins. He delayed his attempt and allowed the Town keeper to block the chance.

As the final whistle blew, Town were left to rue not taking their chances in an entertaining encounter as Walton Casuals returned the top of the league.
