FA Carlsberg Trophy Preliminary Round

5th October 2013

Whitstable Town crushed Sittingbourne as they proceeded to the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Whitstable started the game on top and their first opportunity came when James Morrish nearly took advantage when Sittingbourne keeper Adam Molloy  juggled the ball onto Morrish’s head but the attempt went just wide. Four minutes later Town took a deserved lead when former Sittingbourne striker Ashley Baverstock  fired in a rebound from close range following an

initial attempt from Morrish. Two minutes later the Brickies had their first chance when Hicham Akhazzan headed wide. Town were back on the attack after 14 minutes when Scott Heard had a shot from the edge of the area that went over the bar. Five minutes later Town could have extended their lead as Baverstock unleashed a shot from 35 yards but Molloy was on hand to brilliantly tip the ball over the cross bar for a corner. On 21 minutes Craig Thompson found himself on the end of a Steve Hafner free kick but his header went over the bar. Town continued to dominate and Laurence Harvey was next to have a opportunity just miss the target as he headed over from a Heard free kick. Sittingbourne came more into the game as the half progressed and Akhazzan firstly hooked over the bar after 31 minutes and then four minutes before the break he forced Luke Watkins into a fine save but they were unable to level the scores before the half time break.

Town stepped up the pressure after the break and were soon two goals to the good after 52 minutes as Thompson got on the end of a through ball and slotted the ball past Molloy into the back of the net. This seemed to knock the spirit out of the hosts. After 56 minutes Heard got on the end of a ball from Joe Kane on the left but he spooned his attempt over the bar. On the hour Sittingbourne could have pulled one back but Watkins was on hand to save from Ryan Golding. Just a minute later at the other end Heard got onto a loose ball but shot wide of the target. After  63 minutes Baverstock got his second as he tapped in from close range to

give Town a three goal lead. Baverstock was back in the action on 70 minutes when he was one on one with Molloy but his attempt went over the bar. On 73 minutes Tom Loynes cut in for the Brickies but his attempt went over the bar.   Another Sittingbourne attack ended when ex Whitstable defender Tom Brunt had a long range shot which was well caught by Watkins just under the bar.  Substitute Charlie Smith then came into the action after 80 minutes as he extended Town’s lead to four as he rounded  Molloy  to slot the ball home.  The Sittingbourne defence was now all over the place and Smith again found himself free on the left hand side of the penalty area and slotted the ball home for number five.  Sittingbourne did have a consolation goal with three minutes to go when Golding fired in. One final attack in injury time saw Billy Cobb send in a bullet shot from 30 yards just wide of the post.

This was a great performance from Town who will now play Potters Bar Town at home on 19th October 2013.
